Extended warranty buyback (2nd buyback) negotiation

A lot of us over on the ClubTouareg forum are now getting buyback offers from VW, trying to buy our TDI Touaregs out of the Dieselgate extended emissions warranty, rather than do costly repairs. The dealerships really struggle with fixing the 3.0 TDI engines- often spending 6+ months and tens of thousands of dollars replacing parts, without successfully fixing issues. Most of these offers seem not very great- around $10k for cars that are likely worth more than that in working condition.

Has anyone on here had this type of buyback offer, and have any details, or advice? Has anyone been bought out of the warranty on conditions where they get to keep the damaged vehicle, and repair it themselves?

My 2009 TDI Touareg has been sitting at the dealership for 3 weeks now, waiting for an answer from VW on if they can teardown the engine to look for the cause of a loud clicking sound (I suspect a timing chain tensioner issue). I'm expecting them to come back with some sort of buyback offer, however I've recently put a lot of expensive offroad modifications into my Touareg (lift, winch, skid plates, roof tent, etc.) and I'm not really interested in redoing all of that labor on another car, I really just want to fix this one.

There are just too many to list....
I fix things on TDIs all the time that are under warranty. I don't do it for free (I don't do a half-assed job, either). Nothing really stopping you there. I get it, you'd like for them to just honor the warranty and fix it correctly. But as we've seen all to often, they simply can't, or won't. This is also why deletes are so popular.

Of course the CATA engines are not nearly as good as the later CNRBs, but it doesn't mean they cannot be fixed. But it isn't cheap. The T'reg is no Golf.

That's not really what I'm asking about- I am wondering about negotiating w/ VW regarding buyback offers.

Why do you say that? Although mine seems to have this issue, anecdotally, on the Touareg forums it seems like timing chain rattle and failure are a lot more common on the CNRB engines. The CATA also seems to be quieter, and feels more responsive (despite less peak hp), probably from a smaller turbo. Both engines suffer from being overly complex... I miss my ALH Golf but need the offroad capabilities of the Touareg.

When does your warranty expire?
The day after Christmas this year. I am doubtful I will even hear anything from them before that, but at least they have it parked indoors, and I have a brand new Atlas loaner for free in the meantime.

Since it broke during the warranty period they still owe you a fixed vehicle. Maybe they'll fix and return your car before the Dieselgate 10 year anniversary (2025). At least you get a loaner until then.

Yep, I will likely just refuse any buyback offer and make them fix it.

So VW offered a silly low buyback offer of about $6k, which is less than I've spent recently on custom offroad parts like a winch, lift, etc. They said the policy is to not negotiate, but only offer a book value based on year and mileage.

They said they don't have any leads on the cause of the problem, but are just loading up the parts cannon, and ordering almost everything in the engine bay new including the full engine, injector pump, and turbo. The turbo is already a new one they installed less than a year ago.

Is the clicking noise finally fixed? Did you get a warranty extension with all the work done?
