hello all,
I have a 2015 tdi and i picked up some 225/50r17 tires for cheap. they are almost new(11/32 and 10/32) I would like to know if I can put them on? will I have rubbing issues on the wheelwell? I would rather use these than spend 700 on new winter tires.

thanks for all the help!

I think stock on my 2012 highline were 225/45/17, so that is only a difference of 3.6%. Unless you are lowered, i don't think you will rub at all. You might have a little better mileage, and your speedometer might line up a little bit better though.

how did you calculate that? I thought it wasn't that big of a deal but when I went to the garage they said if they put them on they would rub...
I'm on stock suspension

I ran 225/40R18 on my lowered Jetta for years with no problems.
I seriously doubt 225/50R17's would rub on a stock Jetta.
MAYBE at full lock you might hit the inner fender liner?

is the original size in 17'' supposed to be 205/50R17? if so, total diameter is 25.08 inch

225/50R17 is 25.86 inch

.8 of an inch on a sedan is a big difference, not recommended. will it rub? maybe, maybe not. is your odometer going to be mis reading actual mileage? definitely.

comparing to 225/45R17 is even worst.

225/45R17 outer diameter is 24.98 inch. 225/50R17 will be too big. especially in the winter for us folks in quebec.

3.6% is a lot actually. you def don't want to be higher than 3%. -3% to +2% is the treshold you want to be in between

The original size is 225/45R17. I am running 205/50R17 in the winter, as I prefer a slightly narrower tire for improved bite.

I guess I am less concerned than you for running a larger diameter tire, as the stock speedo is typically off by around 6-8% anyways. So I like to think it makes the speedo a bit more accurate, while improving highway mileage.

just a update** i put them on no rubbing and i tested my speedo and it is actually more acurate, at 100km/hr my speedo app on my phone varies from 98/97km/hr. and for the odometer I dont really care about the reading.

if the tires suck in the winter i will buy the right size, but i dont think it will be a problem.

thanks for all the help
