At the absolute risk of wasting both our time, I'll provide my .02:
Around here, rolling coal is generally considered an immature display of wasteful and inconsiderate behavior. Why? Well, for a group of people who love TDIs for (insert Fred's title here) Economy, Longevity, and Performance, and have been advocating in favor of diesel passenger cars for many years, vehicles that pollute the public roadways with black diesel smoke serve only to work against us. Not only is black smoke usually an indicator of wasted fuel, but gives diesel a bad name, even as diesel fans continue to hope for the return of affordable, efficient TDIs to the marketplace.
As an aside, when I see a truck roll coal, I don't think it's cool or neat or macho. I think first how sad it is that someone purposely wasted time (and money) seeking for a way to waste fuel, pollute the roadways, and demonstrate their poor sense of judgement, but also I think about the driver behind me shaking a fist at my "yes, it's a diesel" club plate frame.
Loud pipes don't impress me. Loud music doesn't impress me. Boy racers and crappy drivers and black smoke doesn't impress me. Your safe, civil, mature driving in shared public spaces impresses me.
