A6 lack of power

My 2015 A6 tdi threw code p0101 mass airflow sensor. Took it in to dealership, they told me the air cleaner needed replacement and service was not covered under the emissions warranty. My bad I thought…should have changed it myself. Charged me 200 for diagnostic and another 160 for air cleaner and installation. CEL light off, all good I thought.

Next day, light is back on. Phone dealership, can’t get me in for 3 weeks. Drove the car very little assuming it wasn’t a good idea with CEL on. The morning of my appointment the CEL light is off (of course). Explained this to service advisor, they said they would look at it anyway. Asked them to change fuel filter (ahead of schedule) while they had the car. Call me later that day to pick up the car and receive the following diagnosis.
- MAF sensor good, no leaks on intake
- lack of power
- excessive impeller play in all directions on turbo, suspect turbo is failing
Service advisor talked about potential wastegate issues, pretty vague. Told me nothing else could be done until the CEL is back on so they can further diagnose the issue.

Car drives ok around town, bad lag as usual which is somewhat better in sport mode…took it on the freeway for full throttle run. Very little pickup beyond 100 km/hr. Passing would be somewhat risky. No weird noises, just no power.

I assumed CEL would come on soon since it’s clearly way down on power but a week later and no light. I find it outrageous that they would send me out the door with the car running like this. I told them I have a long road trip coming up and I’m concerned about getting stranded somewhere besides the fact that it has no passing power.

Service advisor told me verbally that emissions warranty will cover turbo issues (I have another 1.5 years left) they Just need a CEL condition to proceed with repair and claim.

Clearly there is an issue, are they just slow playing to avoid a claim? What code could they be looking for? Should I escalate to service manager?

Any thoughts from the group would be welcomed! Love the car, just want to get it back running properly.

Check the boost pipes, I got the code myself but it was a crack in a boost pipe causing it. Sometimes forget that the boost pipes are part of the intake and a leak in the intake can throw that code.

That could give you lag too, boost escaping so takes longer to build enough to get some power out.

Update, hooked up a reader to determine boost pressure. I assumed boost was low due to lack of power but it actually runs as high as 40 psi before falling back to 25. Not a lot of power even at 40.

Everything sounds ok while driving but when you attempt to rev engine up while in park it stumbles badly and makes a bad sounding rattle noise. Not the normal diesel sound…sounds like something rattling around. No unusual noises when you drive it normally.

I‘lol try to speak with service manager tomorrow.
