My buddy has a wagon he wants to sell me.
His wife lost the key.
He had a new key made but could not get the computer to recognize it.
He has Hex-NET and tach.
So he got the number from the cluster but still couldn't get it to work.
He took it to the dealership and they charged $175 for nothing.
They couldn't do it.

So he swapped in a cluster, ECU and key chip from another car.
Now the windows, sunroof etc. don't work.
Could that be because he got the stuff from a car without electric windows?

I used VCDS to set the IQ and timing.
Codes it throws are glow plug stuff.
Immo interfering with start,.. intermitant.

Yes it's possible. You can change the adaption to turn them on, or just get the immo deleted from the original ecm.

Thanks.
I'll play with this setup and see if I can turn the windows on in adaptation.

Seriously, get the old ECU and cluster, send ECU it to Malone. He tunes the immobilizer out and everything is good again. It's that easy.

I asked him to find the old cluster, key chip and ECU.
I'd still like to see if I can get the windows working with VCDS.

I tried Select
then 46-comfort control
and this message appeared:
No response from controller
When I tried to go into engine I got all the numbers in the above spaces.
I think it's ECU numbers or something.
That all works because I was able to set the timing and IQ.

None of those top spaces have numbers in 46-CC.
It tries 3 times and then the no response box shows up.

IIRC the comfort module is part of the cluster? Try connecting to the cluster and see what it's soft coding is?

There are just too many to list....
It would be easiest to send the ECU to have the key tuned out, likely around $100

This. This should have been done from the beginning. No drama, no "saga", no issues. And then, MAKE SURE THE CAR HAS ALL THREE OF ITS KEYS (at least), so this cannot ever happen again. Sheesh, what is it with all the people who back themselves into a corner with only one key for their car?

Is it three keys you must have?
I thought it was two.

I got three keys when I bought my 03.
Where would I have been if I lost one?

Two minimum, three so you can leave one with a trusted friend.
I keep one in the glove box, though I've never lost one.

That car left the factory with three keys (2 fob, 1 valet) is what I meant. You only "need" one of course to use the car... but if it gets lost... then you paint yourself into a corner.

Just a pet peeve of mine, and it is SO COMMON. We buy and sell lots of cars here, and it is always amazing to me just how many people only have one key to their vehicle(s). And they look at us like WE are the weird ones when we ask for the rest of them, or another one (in case of some issue that could require it). Always fun too when there is an agreed upon trade in price that has the entire car, including all its keys, in that figure, and at the last minute when they bring their car in, they only have the one. Then they shrug it off, and the boss says "OK, well then I have to deduct this from the agreed upon price, and it is $XXX to get it even". Some of these keys are expensive. All the more reason to take care of them.

I totally agree with you Oilhammer, can't tell you how many cars I've purchased that had just one key. One of them was just the valet! So far haven't lost any, knock on wood.

When my kids got their first cars I would always keep one of the keys. My daughter was notorious for losing hers. When she was away at college and called because she lost one, I'd tell her she'd have to wait for me to get one made and send it to her. No way I was sending her the remaining key, because I knew what was going to happen. Once I had to send the spare key to a VW dealer in Los Angeles so they could start her car when it was towed in keyless.

I misplace keys, but rarely lose them. I do tend to put them in the washing machine, however. :(

This is why I have one in the glove box, I am often going somewhere, and well it's cheaper, and quicker, to have the spare in the car.
I have one, out two, in my to drawer now also.
Still have to pull the cluster and cut the immobilizer light so it doesn't flash when I use the others. At least it still drives, just that annoying light that flashes...

When I take a road trip I always bring a spare. And specifically don't leave it in the car.

All my vehicles prior to my TDI (the only one I own with a chip in the keys), the first place I went was a hardware store to get a couple extra keys made, and one always went in my wallet or in a separate pocket from the "main" key.

I started that habit because on my first car, the dome light didn't turn on when you opened the driver's door, and the buzzer that was supposed to sound if you either left the headlights on or the key in the ignition didn't work, and I locked my keys in the car once.

These days, with the remote lock fob either on the same ring as the key (my Jeep) or built into the key (VW), I always lock via remote and you can't hit the fob button if it's not in your hand...

Sent the original ECU for an immo delete.
Installed it and the original cluster.
It starts and the windows work again. yeahhh.
The immo delete light keeps flashing.
How to fix that?

Needs a timing belt bad.
Still has a coolant leak, might egr stuff.
Steering rack leaks

The immob light you'll have to fix with a piece of black electrical tape unfortunately. :)

The key is still wrong, so the cluster is still complaining... it's just that now your ECU has been programmed to ignore the cluster.

Well I did take the precaution of getting a spare fob and a valet key cut. And Jeff of RC took it upon himself to delete the immobiliser last tune upgrade. "I've been seeing problems on these MkIVs, so I just deleted it." Who am I to argue, lol.

The car did come with 2 original fobs, but both showing their age. One the key won't lock open, the other the buttons got dodgy and the key retainer hoop broke, so of course it gets lost. Digging through the key cupboard I finally found all the spares.

So I get the new fob out, buttons don't work, but at this stage I'm sayin' hey, "How many years did you use the key to open and lock the car, no big deal."

Yes the immo light winks at me, but all the keys work, and I've got to figure a safe place to stash the valet somewhere in/under the car so I can't get stranded without a key. So after driving for a couple of days with the new fob, out of habit,
I hit the unlock button. Lock pops up,,,,,,,,,, whaaaaat? Press the lock, car beeps and locks. Walk around the back ,
hatch unlocks,,,,,,,,,,, wowowow!

All's I can think is somehow the chip in the cluster has affected the fob chip. Immo light still flashes, but the fob buttons are now programmed. Go figger,,,,,,,,,,, beats me.

I paid whitbred much less than 100 buck to do a batch of immo deletes on a pile of engine computers. Send it out to him

Oh, now you tell me I could have had it done much cheaper, ha.

Is this something I could have done myself with VCDS?
Because I thought Kerma did something more that would take care of the light too.

Not with vcds. My locksmith gave me my secret keycode on my 03 when he cut a blade for my fob. I think they all can with the smartpro key system.after you have keycode you can use vcds for new key

You need another program called Vag-Tacho with cable. it allows access to the cluster anti-theft function and you can delete old keys and program new ones. You need a single working key with working chip to program new ones with a new/blank rfid chip

All you need is not-used-on-another-car (on YOUR car is ok) keys and the SKC, which is a 4-digit number. This presumes 2003 or earlier. Forget guessing it. Vag-tacho can pull it, or some other tools. VCDS CANNOT pull it. Once you have it and a not-used-before key, you can pair them, plus your existing keys.

I have access to vag tacho and understand about the SKC
and no one mentioned the immo delete and shutting the light off.
so I assume you are talking about getting a new key to work.

I got it immo deleted by Kerma, sent it in.
It starts, the key works, the light flashing is the current problem I'm asking about.
Will vag tacho help with that?

Black tape over the light, or you can send the cluster to someone to have it modified as well.

Soo if I put a new grain of rice in the key (RFID)
and program it to the car
the light will quit flashing?
I was going to tape the old grain to the other cluster anyway because it worked with it.
